$20,000 Ontario Trillium Foundation Grant for Fare Share Food Banks

Cobourg – On Thursday, December 14th, the Northumberland Fare Share Food Banks held its annual volunteer dinner at the Columbus Community Centre in Cobourg. Local MPP Lou Rinaldi and Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF) volunteer Leslie Orpana were both on hand to congratulate Fare Share’s volunteers and hear more about how a $20,000 Seed grant awarded this summer is creating more efficiencies for the organization.

“Today's Trillium grant to Northumberland Fare Share will strengthen the capacity of this organization to support our communities. For three decades, the Fare Share Food Bank has been on the front lines of providing quality and nutritious foods to our friends and neighbours in hard times. Fare Share is one of the best representations of community organizations coming together to lend their critical support when it matters most,” said Lou Rinaldi, MPP for Northumberland-Quinte West.

Through the efforts of almost 100 community volunteers, the Northumberland Fare Share Food Banks delivers over 360,000 lbs of food annually to over 2,300 unique individuals in the communities of Port Hope and Cobourg. Using OTF’s Seed grant, Fare Share has been piloting a new approach to providing food to those in need in its communities. It recognized that, as an organization, it had grown to the point where it needed to make improvements in several areas including: records and database management, volunteer coordination and community/donor liaison and outreach.  Funds from the grant are being used to staff a 10-month part-time paid position.

“We are a very busy organization, and we have many volunteers and events that need to be organized. By bringing on someone who can support the board and move things forward on a more efficient pace, we can continue to innovate to help those who need it on our community,” explained Northumberland Fare Share Food Banks Executive Director Rick Riley.

And thanks to the grant, Fare Share can ensure that the administrative support it covers will significantly improve the effectiveness and efficiency of day-to-day operations. Specific help with presentations, marketing, social media, project/event management, records management and the digitization of archived files are among some of the areas that Fare Share is looking to improve.

An agency of the Government of Ontario, the Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF) is one of Canada’s largest granting foundations. With a budget of over $136 million, OTF awards grants to some 1,000 projects every year to build healthy and vibrant Ontario communities.
